Ya'll know you're in for a brief history lesson. The sisters wanted a staircase to give them easy access to the choir loft above, which they were using a ladder at the time, without having to remove precious pew space. Carpenters in the area said it could not be done, so the sisters prayed and one day a stranger shows up with tools and offers to build the staircase. He works for a month, refuses payment of any kind and disappears. The staircase has no metal, only wooden joints, is not attached to any supports at all, and still stumps engineers and architects by its unique design.
